MICRO-FILM PROGRAMS INDIE MOVIES DURING AUG. 30 FESTIVAL

(Champaign-Urbana, IL) Once again, MICRO-FILM teams up with the Video Group of the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center to present defiantly non-Hollywood filmmaking in East Central Illinois!

Two films selected by MICRO-FILM editor Jason Pankoke will be incorporated into an event dubbed IMCfest, which will take place on Saturday, August 30 at the Canopy Club, 708 S. Goodwin, Urbana. The event will run from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. and feature music performances, speakers, zine readings, workshops, info tables, and the films.

This event will also offer hands-on exposure to the tools and information made available by the Independent Media Center for area residents interested in creating their own media. The sliding-scale entrance fee to IMCfest will help support an aggressive Capital Campaign push by this non-profit, grassroots organization to purchase its own building by the end of 2003.

MICRO-FILM and the IMC Video Group will provide an encore of the feature length comedy EXISTO, which already had a successful C-U screening earlier this year at the current IMC space in downtown Urbana. "Anybody that believes art and performance can inspire vision and change must see this film," says Pankoke, who featured EXISTO as the cover story of MICRO-FILM #4. "This movie entertains, informs, provokes, satirizes, and empowers in a lively way. So much so that our audience back in April applauded at the end - twice!

"EXISTO is also very timely in its topical leanings, demonstrating how individuals can come together to create a positive world for themselves where they can think and express freely," continues Pankoke. "The very spirit of this movie is akin to the human dynamic that breathes life into the Urbana IMC. It is not prefabricated by a business plan. It is not franchised from corporate offices thousands of miles away. It will always be a sum total of what community members put into it, just as the underground club in the movie thrives when Existo and his brethren create astounding collaborations under its roof."

The IMC Video Group and MICRO-FILM have also scheduled TRIBUTARY, a documentary about tribute bands by Chicago filmmaker Russ Forster. Produced over several years and shot in many cities across the United States, the film contains interviews with dozens of working musicians who play in such bands for kicks or for a living. Many recreations are featured, including nods to Black Sabbath, AC/DC, the Rolling Stones, Devo, KISS, and Guided by Voices.

"What better place to show TRIBUTARY than a club that loves to book tribute bands?" says Pankoke. "The delight of this film is that the director keeps his approach simple - it's the musicians talking about the peculiarities of being in a tribute band, bridged with generous footage of the bands doing their thing to give us a range of interpretations." TRIBUTARY director Forster plans to attend the IMCfest screening and introduce the film.

Show times for EXISTO and TRIBUTARY will be announced next week. Please look to the IMC web site (www.ucimc.org) or local media such as The Paper, buzz, the News-Gazette, and WEFT radio for further details.

The IMC Video Group meets every Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the IMC, 218 W. Main, downtown Urbana.

We are using the 2003-4 school year of the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign as our own timeline to test the concept of MICRO-FILM movie shows in downstate Illinois! Throughout the next several months, we will be bringing crazy indie movies to all corners of C-U (as well as a handful outside city limits) to see which spaces will serve as the best venues for MICRO-FILM madness!

This is also a trial run for you, the discriminating movie fan, to show us that it's worth our while to make the effort. Sure, we could hoard all of these undiscovered gems in the privacy of our living rooms, but we want to share! Take a chance with your viewing habits by coming out to the MICRO-FILM movie shows, and support the local businesses that are kind enough to give us public space to cut loose! These will also be the definitive events outside of "Ebertfest" for area filmmakers and film students to meet, relax, and talk some serious shop.

Sub Rosa Studios, a distributor of DVD and home video titles with a primary leaning toward funky cult-style independent and international features, has announced the formation of a new coalition to provide smaller distributors with a united coalition to enhance the sales of their titles in the home entertainment market.

"Independent movies are constantly struggling for survival," says Ron Bonk, founder and president of Sub Rosa Studios. "It doesn't help that the marketplace keeps changing the rules as to what can make a small cult movie a big time success."

Under the new Sub Rosa Studios' Global Independent Media Force, independent producers and distributors who've had difficulties dealing directly with the major home entertainment retail channels or the middlemen sources that serve them can now take advantage of an entry point maintained by a major recognized entity in this sector.

"Sub Rosa Studios has been distributing movies for over a decade and we've made great connections with many of the major buyers out there," explains Bonk. "The problem is, many major companies don't want to keep track over a ton of accounts, and thus they make smaller independent producers and distributors go through a third party source to do business with them. At that point, they producers and distributors are at the mercy of that third party sources, which often require constant pressure to push the titles and sometimes even abruptly go out of business or change their title offerings. This leaves many producers and distributors suddenly cut off from the major buyers and forced to scramble to find a new pipeline to get their product out."

Noting that major video retail channels are expanding their selection of cult-style titles, Sub Rosa Studios' Global Independent Media Force will solidify the shaky ground that connects the smaller producers and distributors with these outlets.

"We feel that if we can round up all the indie filmmakers and distributors out there looking to get their product out on a national basis, we can demand their attention," says Bonk. "We can build strength in numbers - literally hundreds and eventually thousands of indie studios all behind one source - making us a force these major buyers will have to pay attention to. We can be as strong as a studio in Hollywood. And the difference here is that we won't move on. We will always handle cult and independent product. We can be a permanent doorway between the true independents and the major buyers."

In addition, the coalition will provide expert assistance in all aspects of marketing, packaging, publicity, duplication, and design. Financial involvement in the coalition's process is determined by the depth and scope of assistance that is required, thus offering a fair and flexible range to work within the budgets of the producers and distributors joining the coalition. Sub Rosa Studios is currently preparing its first issue of a new trade catalog "Indie Force" for releases coming out in November 2003, which will highlight this coalition and its titles.

All three Seduction Cinema "Contract Actresses" - Darian Caine, Misty Mundae and Julian Wells - are busy packing their bags, getting ready for a trip out to the West Coast and sunny Los Angeles. The mission: two Seduction Cinema films, back-to-back, under the directorial aegis of Tony Marsiglia (Dr. Jekyll and Mistress Hyde, Sin Sisters), with Darian, Misty and Julian exploring unique starring roles in each. The two films include Seduction Cinema's Dracula - a David Lynch-textured, contemporary interpretation of the classic Stoker story - and Chantal, a remake of the 1969 Nick Philips' sexploitation cult classic for the Retro-Seduction Cinema label. Dracula will be up at bat first, scheduled for shooting on Super-16mm, at various exotic locales in and around LA. Both Dracula and Chantal are being sot on Super-16mm film and being transferred to Sony Hi-Def Video for state-of-the-art post production. Chantal follows hot on Dracula's heels and it tells the story of a delusional young woman, freshly arrived in Hollywood to make it big, who instead finds herself immersed in the grim and seedy underbelly of Tinseltown.

In addition to Misty, Julian and Darian, Chantal will feature voluptuous 'B' movie icon Julie Strain, and Seduction Cinema is absolutely thrilled to finally be able to work with this statuesque beauty and universally adored fan-favorite! SC is equally excited to be working once again with delicious 1995 Playboy Cover Model Shelly Jones, who starred as the ravishing, sex-starved vampire in SC's 2000 release Hot Vampire Nights and is now having the tables turned by playing modern-day vampire hunter Van Helsing in Dracula. And as if one Strain and one Jones weren't enough, Seduction Cinema can't contain its excitement in reporting that Julie's beautiful sister, Lizzy, and Shelly's beautiful sister, Casey, will play alongside their respective siblings - Julie and Lizzy in Chantal; Shelly and Casey in Dracula. For both Casey and Lizzy, these two projects constitute their first feature film experience, and SC couldn't be happier to have them on board.

In Dracula and Chantal, respectively, Darian Caine portrays the titular bloodsucker (the role she was born to play!) & Victoria the brash, sex-starved photographer; Misty Mundae stars as the vulnerable and confused Mina Harker & the delusional Chantal; Julian Wells is the gender-obscure Jonathan Harker, c.e.o. of Harker Pharmaceuticals & Traci the seasoned prostitute; and Andrea Davis is the manipulative, bloodthirsty vampire Sarah & Lisa the scheming, exploitive pimp. Scheduling Dracula and Chantal one after the other so that it fit the actresses' schedules was a tough job, and required a bit of last minute juggling, but the SC team reports that the West Coast productions are a "Go." Both films present the actresses with very challenging and demanding roles, thanks to the eccentric scripts penned by Tony Marsiglia that place a much greater stress upon mood, tone and psychology, and each of them eagerly look forward to the exciting work ahead of them out in Los Angeles

After a lengthy break between its first series of shoots back in May and a weekend of shooting in late July, the romantic mystery-drama Hiding Away finally wrapped over the weekend of August 16 and 17th. The 40-minute movie, starring Victoria Sullivan, frequent MINDSCAPE PICTURES actress Alecia Batson (Time Heals All Wounds) and writer/co-director Frank Parker, is the 13th production to wrap for MINDSCAPE PICTURES. Hiding Away also stars Neil O'Callaghan (More Than Money's Worth) and is co-directed and shot by Jason Santo.

The story revolves around Julie, a very recently heartbroken young woman who discovers after a breakup that she doesn't understand what love is. An archeology graduate student at a New England college, she "hides away" in the school's theater, a quiet place she frequents when life gets rough. Only this time when she visits, she is discovered by Marcus, an unassuming theater tech who, through careful listening and understanding, slowly begins to help Julie understand exactly what love is.

As Julie spends more and more time at the theater with Marcus, her best friend Bethany researches more about the mysterious theater tech, yielding some unsettling answers about Marcus's own reasons for "hiding away."

Hiding Away was shot all around the North Shore Boston, at the campus of Tuft's University, the Salem State University Main Stage and in private residences in Arlington and Medford, MA. It is scheduled to appear with two other movies, A Chance Connection and The Parting on MINDSCAPE PICTURES Presents #2 later this year/early next.

New Jersey-based ei Independent Cinema is excited to announce that its wildly popular Seduction Cinema starlet and contract player, 23-year-old Misty Mundae, has recently starred in a music video for the cutting-edge, boot-to-the-groin-of-the-corporate-music-establishment rock & roll band, CKY, in support of their new album on Island Records - Infiltrate. Destroy. Rebuild. The music video, "Shock & Terror," based upon the band's raucous hit single, was directed by internationally renowned pro skateboarder, filmmaker and pop culture icon, Bam Margera. Among his myriad accomplishments, Margera is both famous and infamous for his outrageous and hilarious exploits on two of the most fanatically watched extreme skit shows, MTV's "Jackass" and the home video best-sellers, CKY Volumes 1 - 4.

Misty Mundae has starred in numerous Seduction Cinema direct-to-video films over the past three years including such top-selling sexy spoofs as "Play-mate of the Apes," "Erotic Survivor," "Gladiator Eroticvs," "Lord of the G-Strings" and the upcoming "SpiderBabe." The continuing success of these movies with fans of the genre combined with their growing penetration into the mainstream - via cable, PPV and Internet broadcast and MPAA R-rated versions available at major rental/sell-through retailers nationwide - has greatly enhanced Mundae's visibility and marketability to the point where she has become a much requested actress and 'B' movie celebrity.

On May 17, 2003, Misty Mundae had appeared as a switchblade-wielding, psycho schoolgirl in the music video, "Rising," directed by frequent CKY band collaborator and producer Joe Frantz for the hardcore band Punishment. As producer and cinematographer for "Shock & Terror," Frantz and his Amerikan Film Society felt Mundae would be perfect as the video's accosted damsel-in-distress while also capitalizing on her rising popularity and ever-growing fan base within the 'B' realm.

The Saturday, July 26, "Shock & Terror" shoot took place at the spacious home of Phil and April Margera - Bam and CKY band member Jess Margera's parents - in West Chester, PA. (And recently refurbished home, too, as Bam had had a skate park built outside and literally INSIDE the house for an upcoming episode of "Bam TV" - a new reality show on MTV - which begins airing in October.) Misty plays a young woman terrorized by a black-cloaked killer (CKY front man Deron Miller), and she ultimately winds up on the kitchen countertop writhing in macabre ecstasy while self inflicting knife wounds to her body. Mundae's professionalism, proffered ideas and gameness for doing whatever it will take to make a shot and scene work, and then giving it her all, was driven home to everyone there.

The exciting, twisted "Shock & Terror" music video will be available on an upcoming DVD release of CKY (Camp Kill Yourself) music videos - a companion piece to their Infiltrate. Destroy. Rebuild album - as well as on MTV. The DVD is currently scheduled for a Christmas 2003 home video release.

Meanwhile, Joe Frantz is putting the finishing touches on his long anticipated documentary, "Bad Luck 13: The Story of an Outlawed Band," which will feature several hardcore bands and cult personalities and celebrities including Misty Mundae.

Very Scary Productions is "proud to announce the completion of post-production on the new independent feature "The Edge Of Reality", which was written by Upstate New York Capital Region filmmakers Bruce G. Hallenbeck and Joe Bagnardi, and directed by Joe as well. Mr. Bagnardi has been making movies in this area for many years now. His writer/director credits include the 1998 cult feature SHADOW TRACKER: VAMPIRE HUNTER, and, more recently, a story segment from the 2002 anthology feature BLOOD OF THE WEREWOLF.

"THE EDGE OF REALITY is made up of three frightening half-hour tales. The three stories are titled "Dead Man", "The Maze", and "The Quarry". "Dead Man" is a tell-tale heart type story. "The Maze" is a tale about a man who comes face to face with his own worst enemy: himself! "The Quarry" is a Bigfoot story . The movie was shot on digital video - a groundbreaking format that allows videographers to capture professional-quality images on a relatively inexpensive budget."

For anyone who's ever watched a movie so bad you wished acting required a permit or that a 14-day waiting period was mandatory to buy a camera... Tempe Video's new Bad Movie Police label seeks out the worst "cine-terrorists" in movie history and brings their crimes to justice for your entertainment! On the heels of glowing praise following preview screenings this summer, the first two episodes in the series, BAD MOVIE POLICE CASE #1: GALAXY OF THE DINOSAURS and BAD MOVIE POLICE CASE #2: CHICKBOXER, will street exclusively on DVD this October 14, 2003 (prebook Sept. 1) at the budget price of just $9.99 SRP each.

Indie film starlets Ariauna Albright (WITCHOUSE 2: BLOOD COVEN) and Lilith Stabs (CREMAINS) join forces as two of the sexiest and most ass-kicking femme crimefighters ever to hit the small screen. As Sgt. Elke Mantooth and Lt. Drucilla Dread, they hunt down the makers of the film industry's worst offenders -- and look good while doing it! Joining them as series regulars are Jeff Dylan Graham (DEAD & ROTTING), Jesse Bean (TV's PROVIDENCE), Rick Irvin (CRYPTZ) and B-movie queen Tanya Dempsey (WITCHOUSE 3: DEMON FIRE) in a recurring role as newscaster Jessica Mills.

Series creator J.R. Bookwalter, director of cult faves such as THE DEAD NEXT DOOR and two popular WITCHOUSE sequels, hopes to build a cult following for BAD MOVIE POLICE by utilizing the actors in ongoing roles and bringing familiar faces and industry veterans in for cameos offering knowing winks to B-movie fanatics. The series particularly targets fans of the classic (and now-defunct) MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 and Elvira's MOVIE MACABRE.

Each entry in the new cult comedy label will feature an all-new opening segment in which the Bad Movie Police attempts to take a bite out of bad movie crime, culminating in a top ten list of the crimes committed against cinematic entertainment. All discs in the series include "evidence" to support how bad the feature is, including a hilarious commentary track, making-of featurettes and still gallery.

Headlining the first two 1992 features in the series is actor James Black, who went from these lost turkeys to more legit fare as star of the popular TV show THE BURNING ZONE and later big-screen roles in OUT OF SIGHT and SOLDIER. GALAXY OF THE DINOSAURS' main claim to fame is the Ed Wood-style inclusion of 35mm stock footage from PLANET OF THE DINOSAURS intercut with new footage shot behind the director's father's house, while CHICKBOXER boasts a "lost" cameo by '80s scream queen Michelle Bauer (HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS) prior to her retirement.

A sneak peek at the advertising campaign for BAD MOVIE POLICE is already online at http://www.badmoviepolice.com along with downloadable JPEG desktops for the Mac or PC. BAD MOVIE POLICE CASE #3: HUMANOIDS FROM ATLANTIS is already in the can and scheduled for release in early 2004, with two additional episodes shooting this fall.

MTI Home Video will release the Sci-fi Thriller FEEDBACK on VHS and DVD October 14, 2003 (prebook: September 25, 2003). FEEDBACK is described as “Memento” meets “The Matrix.” The film is about the ultimate power a hi-tech device, which can communicate 6 hours into the past, can have on the future of three friends.

The VHS will be available in both English and English with Spanish Subtitles. Special DVD features include: widescreen, director’s commentary, interactive menus, scene selection, movie trailers, and optional Spanish subtitles.

Winner of Best Screenplay and Best Editing at the 2002 Slamdunk Film Festival, FEEDBACK stars Joe Tabanella (April’s Shower), Melissa Pursley (Crawl Space), and Jesse Harper (Runners, Quality Time). The film was written, directed and produced by Teo Konuralp.

SYNOPSIS: Set in a bleak and desolate world, this is the story of three friends caught up in a streak of bad luck. Mick (Harper) is dying in a filth-ridden alley after stealing the prototype of a device designed to manipulate time by sending a signal into the past. Mick convinces Lenny (Tabanella) and his girlfriend Sarah (Pursley) of the capabilities of the prototype. From Local Talent Productions:

Just recently we had announced that we had finished the first completed rough cut of THE BOX. It was when viewing this rough cut on a large television where some image quality issues came to light. If you've been following this project over the past few months, you'll know that, nearing the end of the editing process, I had lost a hard drive. However, I had a copy of the film off my computer, so I felt I was okay. However, that backup copy was not of the same quality as the original footage. And when I finalized the rough cut with the final, new shots, there was a distracting, obvious difference between the backup footage and the new footage. So, as much as I hated to admit it to myself, I realized I needed to re-edit the entire project from the original footage.

I've been re-editing every night. It's a time consuming process, but I have such faith in the project that it is worth this effort. I don't want to invalidate everyone's tremendous sacrifice and hard work by putting together a below average product.

I hope to be done with the re-edit so I can finalize the audio-dubbing and sound effects work that's still to be done. I'm working hard to have the project completed by October 20th, which is the deadline for entries into the Saints & Sinners IV festival. With the re-edit, that may be hard to do, but I'm doing my best.

To say this was process has been extremely frustrating lately would be an understatement, but we'll just have to push through it. In the end, however, the product will be better and, after all, that's the point. However, I feel I'm about three months behind where I intended to be as it is, so adding a re-edit to the timeline is something that I am not happy to do. In the interim, I plan on shooting interviews with the cast and crew for the DVD, so at least we'll be making some headway.

From Mark Pirro:

We are finished with all the voiceovers and pick-up shots on Rectuma. The final running time is 1 hour and 42 minutes. Now all we have left to do is add the music, foley effects and do the final mix. We'll very likely be having our cast and crew screening around the end of this month. As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, this won't be open to anyone but the cast, crew and their guests. We may have another test screening where we'll invite some of the rest of you, but I can't swear to it right now. Naturally, you'll hear about the actual premiere screening long before that happens. It'll be around the end of November or beginning of December.

Some of you have been asking about what our next film will be after Rectuma. It's possible that it will be "Root of All Evil." That's a script that was originally written over 20 years ago by myself, Pat Hunter, and Welshee Bassuk, and was optioned a couple of times, but never saw the green light of production. It's a film which is heavy on effects and would have been inconceivable for us to make a few years ago, but with today's technology it's possible. We may also proceed with the often shelved, "Jesus, the Revenge." That script needs a lot of work though. Whereas, Jesus, The Revenge is a comedy in the usual vein of Pirromount, Root of All Evil is a complete departure for us. It delves into witches and terror. Not sure if I'm ready to tackle terror yet. I also had written a script in 1994 called, "The Womanator." It was a parody of The Terminator films, with a woman as the cyborg. I guess there's no point in proceeding with that one now, is there?

From Jim Wynorski:

I've been away for awhile directing a movie in Romania. It's called GARGOYLES, and no its not a sequel to the old tv movie of the same name. This one has state of the art cgi efx and was actually filmed at Castle Dracula in Transylvania. As you might guess, it's hard to get on the Internet when you're that far away around the world.

Also just completed the following pics, which are all due for release sometime before January 2004. They include:

THE LOST TREASURE, starring Stephen Baldwin and Nicolette Sheridan. It's an action adventure pic with plenty of laughs in between. And Nicolette looks so hot.

Also on the horizon is CURSE OF THE KOMODO, starring Melissa Brasselle, Gail Harris, Glori Anne Gilbert, Tim Abell and Jay Richardson(among other faves). It's an old fashioned giant monster flick set on a deserted Pacific Island. Shot partially in Hawaii, it also has plenty of great CGI and a passle of zombies to boot. Sports fans should definitely check this one out.

Coming up, you can also look for SORORITY HOUSE MASSACRE 3, which, unfortunately is not a direct sequel to my part two. Peter Spellos, who played the industructible Orville Ketchum, has a TV series these days and couldn't do it. I did manage to snag a bevy of the hottest internet models however, including Nikki Nova, Angela Little, Kitana Baker(from the superbowl beer commercial), Deanna Merryman(who is never very merry, but still looks great), Stormy Daniels and Nikki Fritz. There still could be a last minute title change here, so I'll update things as they happen.

At the end of August I start production in Vancouver on IT WAITS BELOW, about a giant mutated Moray Eel. Way cool.

Then in September, it's back to Los Angeles for DUSTY GUNS, a western in the tradition of my HARD BOUNTY.

Then back to Vancouver for an action flick entitled SUB SZERO. So things are definitely moving along at a rapid pace.

From Ryan Cavaline and 4th Floor Pictures:

DEMON SLAUGHTER is just about done. This flick is the best damn thing that the 4th Floor has ever put together. There is no release date yet. We will be shopping copies around for possible distribution. As always we will keep you posted. In the next few weeks, there should be a DEMON SLAUGHTER web page up. So, keep checking back for updates. SO WHATS IT ABOUT? Demon Slaughter is about Jimmy, a hitman who wants out of his mafia family. Well, getting out isn't that easy. Jimmy soon finds himself doing everything he can do to stay alive from his mob family and the dead. The flick is full of gun shoot outs and zombies. Plus, this is the first project that we have ever done Green Screen effects and CGI effects. Its looking really great!!! I'll keep you posted on this project and keep checking back for updates...

MEAT HOOK is now in post production. Its been almost a year in the making and the movie is finally starting to see the light of day. We are hoping to have a late August release of this project. Keep checking back for more news. Also in post production is SPLATTERFEST... SLOWLY... Its coming along... We are putting this project on hold until MEAT HOOK and DEMON SLAUGHTER are done. We are still working on the re-edited version of DAY OF THE AX (the re-titled version). All of the shorts featured on the movie will be done in the style of the 80's slasher flicks. One short that will be featured is titled HUMAN FLESH BUTCHER by Dripping Dead Films. A short with lots of blood and guts. Another short that will be featured is called SLAUGHTERED WEEKEND. This little short was made by Joel Wynkoop. You've got to see this one... We are hoping for a fall DVD release of this movie.

The full length movie "DEAD BODY MAN" should start shooting late Aug. This was first shot as a short on the complation video 3 EVIL TALES. Now its getting the royal treatment and made into a full length flick. Also in the works is a scary SCARECROW movie. Plus JOEL WYNKOOP'S "FALL OF AN ACTOR" will hit post production this fall.
