I was fortunate to get this e-mail in today from my good friends at Sharkey Video.

"Sharkey Video is happy to announce the long awaited release of Fempyra, the female alien-vampire saga starring Dawn Murphy.

"The video is actually being released as a featurette (sort of pilot to a possible feature.)

"It includes the pilot as well as behind the-scenes footage, bloopers and an exclusive interview with Dawn Murphy who recounts the many obstacles that were faced during production.

"This approx 40 minute featurette will be offered in our next drawing for a FREE video at the upcoming Horrorfind Convention in Baltimore, Saturday August 25th.

"We will also be distributing titles such as Backwoods Marcy in a new collectors edition and other new titles such as Last Resort and Last Laugh- The Final Cut.

"David Lee will be there to distribute videos and answer questions. And back by popular demand- our $5 dollar video bargains. We will also have $10 and $15 video sections for new releases and other rare video finds. We will have many new titles available for the avid B-Movie collector to rummage through.

"I'll see you there, Al. Hope all is well with you. Dawn and Kayla are doing great."

WHAT'S BEEN UP LATELY

I've had recent shows in Raleigh NC (at King's) and in Knoxville TN (at the 319), which were both a lot of fun. The Raleigh show was attended by some of the cast and crew from "MY STRUGGLE", since most of the flick was shot in Raleigh. I showed movies and had a table at Fantasm, a convention here in Atlanta. Last weekend we ( Nancy Collins & myself) held the first of our RUGBURN events. Similar in concept to our LOVE CAMP 2000 events of last year, RUGBURN is a multi-media event with bands, DJs, guest artists, lots of nudity and more. Guests at the first RUGBURN included the bands EVIL TWIN, 5 MORE DEAD, SLEAZOID and FIENDS CARNIVAL OF SOULS. Guest artists included SKIP WILLIAMSON, DAN HENDERSON, LEE CAUSSEAUX and others. As with the LOVE CAMP events, we plan to host RUGBURN on a quarterly basis.

"THAT'S JUST WRONG!"

Preparations and preliminary work are still going into my next movie project, "THAT'S JUST WRONG!". Most of the shooting will take place here in Atlanta, with editing and post-production slated to take place in Knoxville. Work on the movie will begin in earnest once I'm back from the big June screening tour.

Video Outlaw is pleased to announce the upcoming releases of three new films that will propel the horror and exploitation label into the glamorous world of DVD. Video Outlaw will be the first home video label to commit to a regular release schedule of contemporary underground horror films on DVD, thus giving fans of the genre access to films that until now would never have experienced such a release. Jeff Burton and Out of Time Production's stalker-in-the-woods chiller The Night Divides the Day, Steve Sessions' frightful and creepy anthology Cremains, and David Goldberg's Demon Lust (a.k.a. Eyes are Upon You) starring b-movie legends Brinke Stevens and Tom Savini will each experience a VHS and Special Edition DVD release in the coming months.

The VHS and DVD release of The Night Divides the Day will feature the sexy and twisted featurette, The Two-Headed Pervert, newly produced and directed by filmmaker Brian Wilson and fetish photographer Ward Boult. The DVD will also include as a bonus extra a horror short directed by TNDTD director Jeff Burton.

The VHS and DVD release of Cremains will feature a wealth of wild out-takes, bloopers, and deleted scenes.

The VHS and DVD release of Demon Lust will include the Ward Boult/Brian Wilson produced ultra-erotic featurette, Demon Familiars, starring Brinke Stevens who bares it all in this stylish and hot-blooded lesbian horror short. The DVD will also present a behind-the-scenes documentary and an up-close-and-personal look at Ms. Stevens on the set of Demon Lust.

The following huge update comes from Matt Walsh and his Armagedon Films website.

David DeCoteau's FINAL STAB, written by Yours Truly and shot in 2000 for Sidekick Entertainment, was recently licensed to Blockbuster Video for an exclusive domestic release this Halloween -- the same deal that THE BROTHERHOOD enjoyed last year. Speaking of THE BROTHERHOOD, the DeCoteau-lensed, J.R. Bookwalter-edited YOUNG WARLOCKS, which I developed for DeCoteau and Regent Entertainment, has been retitled THE BROTHERHOOD II: YOUNG WARLOCKS. More news on the fate of the sequel should be announced soon, and in the meantime, be sure to check out the trailer, also edited by Bookwalter and narrated by Don "The Voice" LaFontaine (yep, the same guy who narrated the trailers for the SCREAM movies!) on the Tempe Entertainment site!

Also on the writing front is DEEP FREEZE, directed by none other than FX-whiz-turned-auteur John Carl Buechler, of FRIDAY THE 13th PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD fame. The combination of monsters, mayhem and Buechler's MMI makeup and creature effects work (for my money, they created the scariest-looking Jason makeup of the FRIDAY THE 13th series!) even has me psyched-up to see.

http://www.regententertainment.com/regent/deep_freeze.htm

Meanwhile, be sure to keep an eye peeled for my ten-year career retrospective as a B-movie screenwriter, scribed by journalist David Szulkin, due for publication in the Summer issue of Femme Fatales' magazine!

Yes, there is finally another Armageddon Production in the works! Little can be divulged about the project at the present time, other than it promises to be somwhat of a departure from our previous effort, BLOODLETTING. At the moment, only myself, my nefarious partner in crime, Jeff Sisson and BLOODLETTING lead actor James L. Edwards are definitely aboard. Production is expected to begin later this year, and expect to see a devoted site to the project once we're underway.

http://www.jeffreysisson.com

Meanwhile, on the home video front, the long-planned BLOODLETTING DVD is finally a go! A PAL DVD is currently in the works, for release in the U.K. later this year! This disc will contain a director's commentary track as well as commentary from executive producer J.R. Bookwalter and lead actress Ariauna ("Serena") Albright, remastered image and the original stereo soundtrack, and possibly, interviews as well as other extras.

However, because of the push to have this DVD released, the materials are being compiled as we speak for the Special Edition NTSC release here in the States. At the current time, plans are afoot to remaster the soundtrack from the ground up in drool-inspiring Dolby 5.1 surround sound (the Amazing Exploding Baby will never sound better!), and the planned extras include the aforementioned commentary tracks, interviews, the shooting screenplay in Acrobat .pdf form and a never-before-seen music video for Darkside's "Dream Of Witches" (the theme song to BLOODLETTING). The disc will also include a brand new digitally-recorded musical score and an augmented soundtrack, which will include a pair of tunes from legendary Kansas City cowpunk band Boot Hill. Keep your eyes peeled on this site for updates concerning this late-breaking news, release dates and purchase information!

Galvanized to improve the home studio situation for the anticipated BLOODLETTING score redux, I'm currently in the process of upgrading my audio software and hardware to handle 24-bit (studio quality) recording and mixing. The difference, to say the least, is startling ... and may even entail re-recording the album using this upgraded technology. Meanwhile, an MP3 of the album's first serious mixdown is being circulated amongst friends and family. Anyone interested in a preview download may feel free to e-mail ArmageddonMuzic@aol.com a request and I'll take it on a case-by-case basis.

The following update is taken directly from the Mark Pirro website.

Well, it looks like we may be getting closer to getting a DVD release on Polish Vampire in Burbank, Curse of the Queerwolf and Color-Blinded. I'm flying out to Florida this month to talk to a company out there that has expressed interest. If we can work out a satisfactory deal, the movies could hit the streets by the end of summer.

I've already spoken to some of the actors involved in the film regarding interviews for additional material which will be included on the DVDs. The remastering of the films is going well. Various shots have been enhanced and certain "mistakes" have been corrected. For example, there's a scene in Queerwolf where Larry is supposed to be wearing his protective John Wayne medallion and wasn't, due to a continuity error. Well, the medallion has been digitally replaced around his neck. You gotta love this technology.

Hopefully by this time next month I will have some news to report regarding the potential DVD deal.

Independent Filmmaker Claude King, in association with Trakk Productions of Elmira, NY is shooting a full length, independent feature film at various locations throughout the Southern Tier. The film, with working title "These Days", is an original screenplay by producer Claude King. The task of technical production belongs to Trakk Productions and owner Matt Smith.

Matt is no stranger to indie film in the region. His last production, "The Glass Head", was shot and premiered in nearby Wellsboro, PA. The film included performances by members of the Elmira College Theater Department. A more recent collaboration with Polonia Brothers Entertainment of Wellsboro, PA resulted in the recent video release of "The House That Screamed" (distribution by Dead Alive Productions). Polonia Brothers Entertainment has numerous films of the horror genre to their credit. Mark Polonia, a professor at Mansfield University, will provide post-production editing services on "These Days".

The film's texture will be enhanced by the original music of songwriter Scott Partridge of Nashville, TN. Add to that the music of Waters Edge and featuring a performance by "rockers" Enertia, for a very dynamic musical score. Sound engineering will be handled by Gary Wilson of Crow Song Recording, Savona, NY.

"These Days", a fictional teen drama, tells the story of two adolescent brothers who live their lives with reckless abandon, resulting in the death of one of the boys. The surviving brother searches for a reason to carry on.

Things may seem a little quiet at rustyhoot.com lately, but there is good reason for it. Everyone is very busy with our current projects in post-production. Jared Hargrave and Daniel Kelley are slaving over their computers, digitally rotoscoping the special effects that will be featured in Rusty Hoot '99 "The New Hoots". Both Kelley and Hargrave are confident that despite the agonizing wait for this long, overdue movie, the special effects will be well worth it.

Also on the horizon is News at 5. Shot last July, the footage has been sitting on a shelf, waiting for its turn on the editing station. Well with Rusty Hoot '99 about 75% done, we can expect to see News at 5 hit the post-production phase in time for a 2001 release. The first teaser poster for this flick has been made available and can be seen at right. Click on it for a larger version.

Several scripts are in the works as well. Daniel Kelley is devising a few new concepts, including Mormons with Swords 2 "The Continued Adventures of Jesus Christ," an updated version of When Night Falls and an experimental project called The Clock. Meanwhile, Jared Hargrave is cooking up a script titled, Blindfolded. It's a movie about a average man who meets the Devil. Hargrave says that it may end up becoming feature length, and he hopes to have the script finished for a summer shoot.

Look for two of EI's premier indie films to street date on June 5.

RULES FOR MEN - Robert Capelli Jr. and author/attorney Ken Del Vecchio's sexy and hilarious comedy about a successful criminal attorney with 10 golden rules for seducing women - stars Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling from "The Howard Stern Show" and Vincent Pastore of The Sopranos. Based upon the book by Ken Del Vecchio and featuring original music by Jackie Martling, King Norris and The Scoldees, Rules for Men will be released on VHS and DVD and feature plenty of bonus extras including music videos and classic "Joke Man" stand-up.

EI and Friday Home Video's THE BEST OF THE ACAPULCO BLACK FILM FESTIVAL is a collection of African-American short films - each one an award-winner at the #1 annual Black film festival worldwide. The collection showcases films by Rod Gailes OBC (Twin Cousins; the 1999 HBO Short Film Competition award-winner), Dabo Che (Trouble Man), Tracie Ponder (When the Time Comes), and Jermaine Encarnacion (Possum). This VHS and DVD collection is hosted by Lisa Raye (The Players Club/The Wood/host of "The Source").

EI's Zachary Snygg (Kudos for Pseudo-Intellectuals, Blood Bullets Buffoons, In the Hood) is currently in production on his newest feature film, PURGATORY BLUSE, starring Debbie Rochon and an as yet unnamed celebrity. Snygg is working with his long-time cinematographer/collaborator and even more long-time brother Spencer Snygg. PURGATORY BLUSE follows a drug abuser's descent into hell and his last gasp chance at saving his soul…at the expense of others. The movie will see a 2002 release.

Speaking of Spencer Snygg, he has recently wrapped production on his feature film directorial debut - the drama/comedy SOLITAIRE. Shot in and around New Brunswick, NJ, as well as New York City and Brooklyn, Solitaire features a talented African-American cast of up-and-comers and tells the story of two close friends - a guy and girl - who desperately seek love, but don't know just how close at hand it really is. Look for it in 2002.

EI is proud to announce the acquisition of German director Olaf Ittenbach's ambitious and relentless gore-drenched horror film PREMUTOS: DER GEFALLENE ENGEL (The Fallen Angel) for release to U.S. home video. Ittenbach (Burning Moon) has created a film that takes as its starting point the resurrection of the anti-god Premutos, the first fallen angel (before Lucifer). The film ends with a jaw-droppingly grisly, apocalyptic showdown between the living and the dead, with the living making good use of a tank for maximum carnage. PREMUTOS will be released on VHS and DVD in an English-dubbed version and will feature an extensive documentary that will provide a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the creation of this brutal and outrageous masterpiece.

EI Independent Cinema has licensed eight feature films from legendary B-movie producer Sam Sherman whose partnership with the late Al Adamson created some of the most infamous and popular drive-in movies of the 70's including such notorious favorites as Dracula vs. Frankenstein and Satan's Sadists. Of the eight films licensed from Sherman, three are Joseph Sarno masterpieces - his watershed 1967 erotic classic Inga, its sequel The Seduction of Inga, and Swedish Wildcats. The cult erotic/sci-fi epic Cinderella 2000, Nurse Sherri (a.k.a. Hospital of Terror), Blazing Stewardesses, and Naughty Stewardesses are all directed by Al Adamson. Jerry Gross' Female Animal rounds out the roster of films.

The uncut Swedish version of Inga will be seeing its long-awaited, officially licensed release to U.S. home video. Female Animal, too, will be available for the first time on home video, and Cinderella 2000 will experience its first release in its original Todd AO aspect ratio. All eight titles are to be released simultaneously as deluxe VHS and DVD packages on the Retro Seduction Cinema label and will feature plenty of bonus materials including original artwork and commentary tracks by Sam Sherman for Female Animal, Cinderella 2000, Nurse Sherri, Blazing Stewardesses, and Naughty Stewardesses. Stay tuned for more news on these titles.

T. Marquez recently addressed some of the delays on this film RECONCILIATION.

One of the questions I get asked the most is "What ever happened to RECONCILIATION?". It would seem that from all the updates that go onto the Bunk Films web site, that this one project, seems to get little mention. Does this mean we scrapped the movie? No. Actually we have been working hard on it behind the scenes. Editing a feature length film is quite an undertaking for an amateur group, especially one such as Bunk who tries to keep other projects going. Admittedly there were unexpected snafus during filming (about six casting changes), and during post, we still have a lot of high expectations for the second feature length release from Bunk Films.

I think it is safe to admit now that our goal of a Fall 2000 release was a little unrealistic. We started filming in Jan. and battling with everyone's schedules (can we say 13 principal characters?) and location let downs, we finally finished in July. Everyone involved in the project needed a break. After spending the better part of a year filming the project, there was now 52 tapes to sit through and log footage. Of course not all the tapes were full, and some tapes were tapes of scenes we had to re-film for various reasons, there was still plenty of hours to sit through. Once we began the post process of logging footage and slowly importing scenes, we decided we did not think our capture card was going to do the film justice, so we waited a few months (raising funds of course) and invested in a higher end capture card (a Pinnacle DV500 for those keeping score). We have been editing the film since mid-Jan and have only taking time off from it to do paying side projects. And though it is taking much longer than originally anticipated we believe that taking our time and making sure every scene is edited together flawlessly will be better than hurrying to get this project done. Its important to us that the actors and crew who dedicated so much of their time to this project take a sense of pride when release it and actually enjoy the final product. We're still gunning for an early to mid summer release as we are a approximately a 1/4th of the way done with the film, but again, we're not going to sacrifice quality to put out a film that isn't ready.

Here's a recent message from Joe Sherlock, a.k.a. Dr. Squid.

I've been holed up in the lab for too many days. It's good to get out into the salty air and away from so much moss, dampness and tortured screams.

My segment, "Nowhere To Hyde" for the werewolf anthology, "Bite: The Werewolf Chronicles" was sent off to Brimstone Productions last week. The near-20 minute short was written by Kevin Lindenmuth and directed and edited by myself. There remain a few drop-in shots of full moons and some transitions, which will be done by Brimstone as the anthology is compiled. Keep watching http://www.lindenmuth.com/bite.html for updates.

News comes from Rob Ford about his "Studio of Death" website: "Everybody check out my new website when you get a chance, if you've seen it before, go back and take another look. The site is getting a new look and lots of exciting changes."

Last fall, I told you about the new Elvira movie, "Elvira's Haunted Hills" - well, check out their website now! The movie has completed shooting so there are TONS of pictures posted and even a way cool trailer available for download. It has all the look and feel (and typography) of a Roger Corman 1960's trailer...plus Elvira and her hills! Check it out, man: http://www.elvira.com/ehh

Hugh Gallagher recently posted news and a call for cast & crew on his Draculina website about a new vampire movie he's planning.

Here are the highlights:

"We are in early stages of producing a vampire movie. We have our first draft of the script and plan to shape things up to shoot this summer. If you are interested in participating in a production we may be looking for you!

WE WANT FRESH FACES! Don't have a lengthy resume? Don't have any resume at all! Talent and enthusiasm sometime surpass experience. Sometimes... Dependability and the ability to follow things through is a must! If you feel you have what it takes and you think you can fill one of the parts listed below, please e-mail us with a credentials along with a photo(s) and your e-mail address. We will contact you. If we feel that you may are what we are looking for you will be required to act out a part of our script on videotape and send it to us. We will make our decision from that, and iron out the details and contracts from there.

If you would like to be involved in the production in other ways (lighting, sound, you have the perfect place to shoot at, etc.), we would like to hear from you too! This movie will require sexy scenes - but will also have a very strong story! If you look good but can't act, don't bother going any farther!

Main characters:
TINA: Young girl, 18-19 years old. Shy, easily intimidated, still trying to get a grip on her life and which direction to turn. Forced to make difficult decisions that will affect her entire life. Goes from innocence to a harden character by the end. (Requires nudity, lesbian sex scenes).
MERCEDES: Older woman, 25+. Knows what she wants until things go really awry and then becomes very dependent on Tina. Must really be able to go through a wide range of emotions. An unwilling vampire, but a vampire nonetheless. (Requires nudity, lesbian sex scenes).
JIM: Pretty much of a prick. Tina's husband.
DR. COLLINS: Ties up the beginning and end of story. Older male.
PHIL: College kid. Has a lot of ideas... one that gets him dead!
JESSIE: Bar girl. Strips, lesbian scenes, gets bloody! (Requires nudity, lesbian sex scenes).
MISS JONES: Nosy next door neighbor. (Requires nudity)
MICKEY / MATT: Plain clothes cops.

Draculina is also running a contest to name their movie project! The winnner gets a lifetime subscription to Draculina. Send your title ideas to: dracdirect@aol.com

Full details about the movie at at this page:

Here in the lab, projects continue to bubble. More material for the postponed Dr. Squid #10 have come together, but more still needs to be done. In addition a number of movie projects are in various stages of editing, but nothing to announce just yet.

That's all for now. Until next time...

Some of you may have noticed some glitches on the site, especially in the reviews section. My PC took a lightening strike through the phone lines when I was in the middle of uploading content. I can only update when I have access to a working PC. Just give me time and I'll be back on my feet!

Thanks,

ICE FROM THE SUN IN THEATERS IN NYC THIS WEEKEND!

Ice from the Sun, the brutal experimental punk horror movie from director Eric Stanze, is playing at 11pm at The Den of Cin @ Two Boots, 44 Avenue A (between 3rd and 4th Streets) in NYC this weekend. Admission is $5. Support the indies and check out a truly disturbing b-movie! Also, watch for other Sub Rosa movies there soon, like "Dirty Cop No Donut" (mid-June), "Inbred Rednecks" and more!

SUB ROSA PRODUCTION UPDATES

Sub Rosa Main Offices are hard at work on pre-production on two new projects. One will be a TV series/anthology type feature based in the horror genre, the other is a politically incorrect comedy. Scripts are currently in the works for both and production should begin mid-summer. Meanwhile, two other horror projects are being planned for the fall.

Sub Rosa Main has also contracted a filmmaker out in Rochester, NY to shoot another comedy feature. He is currently hard at work on a script based on both his own ideas and an outline from us.

As far as the Sub Rosa anthology, "Dark Descent: Unholy Fire", plans for that movie have been scraped. The first short originally attached to it, "Stumped", is coming out really well and should be done editing this weekend. The second short, "Match", has some serious problems and isn't strong enough as a main piece of an anthology. We had originally planned to go back and recut and re-master earlier shorts like "I've Killed Before" and "Permanent Waves", as well as to recut "City of the Vampires" into a short and add other bonuses like our award-winning short "Less of Two Evils" and bloopers and behind-the-scenes stuff from every production we're done in the past nine years. But after the problems with "Match", the decision was made that we'd rather move forward with new stuff then return to older stuff quite yet. So "Stumped" will come out alone. "Match" will be finished and available just to those who worked on it. The anthology will be put on hold and we'll get back to it sometime down the line. And editing will then begin on "The World vs. Sonny and Gino" and we can better concentrate on production of our newest features that start shooting this summer.

Sub Rosa Midwest has wrapped another fetish/exploitation production. Look for the title to be revealed and some advance pics on the site within the next week. It's in the editing stages and will be available in about 2-4 weeks. Meantime, production has begun on another movie, a fantasy/fetish based feature.

Sub Rosa Extreme is currently in production on two movies being shot back to back. Both are horror/slasher/gore related. Watch for sneak peeks on the site once they hit the editing stage.

Sub Rosa Blue has some specific production underway as well. One's an erotic/fetish movie that production had wrapped on. But part way through the editing the director has decided to shot a couple quick pick-up shots. A screener should be on its way to us in about 1-2 weeks. Also, an erotic Vampire movie is set to roll cameras in about three weeks.

Sorry for all the mystery - but to get all the final details, stay tuned to the site! We'll be adding a new "Sneak Previews" section which will have info on the movies once they hit the editing stages.

Piranha Pictures reports "Production has officially begun on our newest junks, called 'Fifth City.' If you don't know, this movie is a comedy sci-fi kung fu movie. Kind of. I can't explain it, don't ask me! I wanted this movie to be a big fat love fest for independent movies...and I mean the real indie stuff, so I've got a bunch of folk lined up to make special appearances in the movie. Of course, this list may change because let's face it, we're all busy, right? Plus there may be some additions. Let's all get acquainted, shall we?

Starring in the movie is Baltimore underground acting legend Cash Flagg Jr and Christi Etcher. I met Cash on the set of the newest movie that he has starred in, my buddy Alvin Ecarma's pic "Lethal Force." Cash doesn't have a site himself, but here's the address to the movie: www.lethalforcethemovie.com/ This is Christi's first big film role, but she has a lot of experience on the stage. It shall serve me well. Yes. Oh yeah, and I'm playing the third lead. Why? I'm an idiot."

Los Angeles, CA., 04/25/01 "Rape" is the latest narrative release directed and produced by multi-award winning independent filmmaker Bob Bryan. "Rape" is an original screenplay written by Mr. Bryan which explores the psychological and emotional complications arising out of the cycle of dual-victimization played out in an intensely brutal abduction scenario.

In "Rape" the lead character Ray is crippled by a multiple personality disorder and sexual dysfunction issues due to childhood sexual abuse inflicted on him by his father. Hatred, revenge, powerlessness, empathy and retribution are some of the components which are woven together to create this intensely powerful and special presentation. Selected special screenings in Los Angeles will be announced shortly on Mr. Bryan's website http://www.graffitiverite.com.

"THE INVISIBLES is a romantic comedy of word games, sex and pizza. After escaping from a rehab clinic, Jude and Joy, a Rockstar and a Supermodel, seek sanctuary and healing in a Paris flat escaping the public and their own fame. The following is taken from the B-Monster monthly newsletter.

OBITUARIES

Anthony Dexter
Actor Anthony Dexter, who achieved overnight fame following his star turn as Rudolph Valentino in a 1951 biopic, died at his home in Greeley, Colo. He was 88. Dexter's fame was fleeting, however, and the majority of the films in which he starred were low-budget affairs. Cult-film fans will recognize Dexter from his roles in B-level sci-fi films such as "Fire Maidens of Outer Space," "Twelve to the Moon" and "The Phantom Planet."

Born Walter Craig in Talmadge, Neb., he studied drama at the University of Iowa. Following a hitch in the Army Special Services during World War II, he began acting on Broadway in shows such as "The Three Sisters" and "Ah, Wilderness!" Producer Edward Small made much of his search for the ideal actor to impersonate Valentino, claiming it took 11 years and required 400 screen tests. Dexter was chosen from 75,000 applicants. Dexter appeared in several period dramas following "Valentino," including "Captain Kidd and the Slave Girl," "The Black Pirates," and "Captain John Smith and Pocahontas." He made guest appearances on television programs, including "Rawhide," "Bat Masterson" and "The High Chaparral."

Ed "Big Daddy" Roth
"Kustom Kar" counter-culture icon Ed "Big Daddy" Roth died in his Manti, Utah, studio of an apparent heart attack. He was 69. Roth created his cartoon character "Rat Fink," and a host of other similarly styled lovable grotesques (Drag Nut, Mother's Worry, Mr. Gasser) in the late 1950s. They appealed to a generation of teenage rebels, and their commercial success in the form of model kits, T-shirts and plastic figures helped finance his custom hot-rod design work.

The West Coast "Kustom Kar Kulture" thrived throughout the 1950 and 60s with Roth as its leading influence. Author Tom Wolfe described Roth as the "most colorful, the most intellectual and the most capricious" of the car customizers, adding, "He's the Salvador Dali of the movement." The craze spawned myriad Roth model kits, and the "Rat Fink" figure was a ubiquitous cultural fixture for nearly a decade. Many credit Roth with helping to inspire the underground comics movement of the 1960s. Roth once told the Associated Press, "My fanaticism with cars has just destroyed my personal life. ... It's an obsession, an addiction. Every day I pray to God, 'Release me from my calling!' "
