Make-up FX: Blood

by Marc Fratto

Here's the blood formula I developed and used on Strange Things Happen at Sundown. Just so you know, this was tested out against the real thing. (I kid you not. I actually cut myself accidently, while making it, and used the opportunity to perfect the formula.)

-Water (1/4-1/2 cup)
-1 bottle of clear karo syrup
-3 1oz. bottles of red food coloring
-14 drops of blue food coloring
-3 drops yellow food coloring
-3 teaspoons of flour

Mix vigorously.

a few important notes.....

-experiment with the flour. its purpose it to add a consistency to the blood, so that when it runs it doesn't bead up. I also started experimenting with putting it varying degrees of flour, and at one point even used protein powder instead. I found that had a nice effect on the consistency of the blood.

-the more water you add, the more the blood runs. We used 1/4 cup of water for scenes where the blood needed to ooze slowly down a body part. Then we used a 1/2 cup for scenes where blood needed to appear as if it was pouring out of a major artery. Also, if blood needs to run through tubing, the more water you add, the better.

-because this blood is made entirely out of food products, it won't burn sensitive skin like some factory-made blood does, and it can always by used orally. it also washes out of clothing easier (although will take a few washings).

-make the blood at least a few days before the shoot. The closer to the shoot you made the blood, the harder it will be to wash the food coloring off the actors skin.
