Eggs as squibs

By Andrew Copp Recently, Dayton filmmaker Andrew Copp posted an article on the B-Independent Forums regarding squibs that he and others utilized during the filmming of Jim Vanbebber's THE MANSON FAMILY. Here's a repost of Andrew use of eggs as squibs.

1) Take an egg and carefully cut a small hole in the top and bottom. The size should be about half an inch wide.

2) Blow gently into the top hole until all the yolk and egg whites have oozed out ofthe bottom. If you want to be super clean about it then you can gently run some warm water through the egg to wash it out. Let the empty shell dry.

3) Put a peice of gaffers or duct tape over the bottom hole. If you have rubber cement, seal all around the tape as well to make sure no liqued can leak out.

4) Fill the empty shell with fake blood/ Be sure to thin out the blood so it makes a nice splash.

5) Dry off egg shell carefully with a paper towel so no extra blood or fluid is on the outside

6) Put tape on the top hole and seal it the exact same way with rubber cement or ligued latex. (Air drying with a blow dryer makes this quicker)

The real trick is to not break the eggs until the time to shoot. We kept them in the original egg containers until time for the effect.

To use them just stand off camera and throw the egg as hard as you can at the person who is being shot. Hopefully you are a good aim. When it hits, the egg explodes and blood splashes everywhere.

Edit out the frames of the egg sailing into the shot so it picks up just on impact, and viola! Safe bullet hit gag.

We used to use condons filled with blood and tied off super tight and throw those. But somewhere along the line the manufacturing of condoms got considerably better and they stopped breaking on impact! I tried that on my movie BLACK SUN and went through an entire dozen condoms. They just bounced off the person and broke on the pavement (because it was more rough and corase). So the egg method works better but takes way more time.

Andrew Copp is the director of the underground classic THE MUTILATION MAN. His most recent film, THE ATROCITY CIRCLE is now available for rent on Netflix.
