Chapter Excerpt

My apologies about the lack of updates to the site this past month. As many of you know, my day job is that of a tax man and this is my busiest time of year. Over the next few days I'll try my best to catch up with news, reviews, and articles. Also, I'm placing a stop of screener submissions until I can get caught up. With 60+ titles waiting to get reviewed, it will take me a good 4 months to catch up. Currently I'm feeling out reviewers from many of the message board regulars to pick up the slack.

Thanks for understanding,

Chesapeake Releasing launched by industry vets

Baltimore, Md. - Independent film veterans Don Dohler and Joe Ripple have announced the formation of Chesapeake Releasing, which will focus on distributing feature-length movies made by indie producers. Dohler and Ripple are owners of Timewarp Films, a production company that creates horror, sci-fi and action movies.

Chesapeake Releasing will distribute Timewarp's titles - including Harvesters and Stakes - as well as titles produced by other filmmakers. The first release through Chesapeake will be the Timewarp-produced Vampire Sisters, a brand new horror-thriller with erotic overtones. Dohler and Ripple also are negotiating to release features made by several other producers, as well.

Vampire Sisters is scheduled for an August 26 street date. Dohler is a 25-year veteran of the movie business, having produced, written and directed the worldwide cult favorite, The Alien Factor, as well as Fiend, Nightbeast, Galaxy Invader and Blood Massacre. In the 1970s, Dohler also founded the landmark Cinemagic Magazine, which featured the works of future Academy Award®-winners such as Ben Burtt (Star Wars) and Dennis and Robert Skotak (Terminator 2). Dohler published Cinemagic for 7 years before selling the title to Starlog Magazine in 1979. Dohler also edited and published a series of popular "how-to" books that have become favorites of filmmakers around the globe: Film Magic, Stop Motion Animation, and Science Fiction Invasions. Another book, B-Movie Horrors, is a photo-filled chronicle of Dohler's media and moviemaking history. In addition, Dohler edited and published a popular genre magazine, Movie Club, from 1993 to 1998, before turning his full attention back to the movie-making business.

Joe Ripple began his career in the film business as an actor, having appeared in such features as Hunting Humans and Dangerous Mode. He and Dohler became friends when they worked together on Alien Rampage in 1999. The two men decided in 2000 to form Timewarp Films. Ripple directs the company's productions, and Dohler produces.

"The move into distribution is just a logically progression for us," Dohler said. "We want our movies and other films we represent to get the widest release possible, and toward that goal, nobody will work harder at it than we will."

Chesapeake Releasing will offer the highest quality product on Special Edition DVDs and VHS. The company has enlisted the services of top industry facilitators and replicators to produce and fulfill its releases. "We're fortunate to have a fantastic team of talented creative people in place," Ripple said. "That allows us to campaign each title in-house and under our supervision."

Chesapeake Releasing will be sending screener solicitations for Vampire Sisters to buyers in mid-May. The producers anticipate an R rating for the movie.

For more information about Chesapeake Releasing, visit the company's website: Chesapeake Releasing or write: Chesapeake Releasing, 12 Moray Court, Baltimore, Md. 21236

Sharkey Video resumes shooting on The Deep Undead this month in our new studio. We now have plenty of room for the complex interior sets required for the script. We hope to have all the interior scenes done before the spring so we can concentrate on completing the very difficult underwater sequences in the warmer months. But things are looking good so far for a completion date of Oct 2003.

Here is a link to our website to view a few pics from the movie: http://www.sharkeyvideo.20fr.com/news.html.

We are also planning the digital re-mastering of Backwoods Marcy for both DVD and VHS versions.

Sharkey will also be teaming up once again with Phil Herman of Falcon Video to edit their latest flick- Horrortales 2.

What a busy time and many festivals are on the way. Sharkey has really left the distribution world almost entirely so that we can concentrate more on production and getting are movies submitted into more genre festivals.

We learned alot about distribution from Sub Rosa and Draculina who still carry some of our titles, but it's time for us to move on and concentrate on the movie making beacuse that's what we love.

(and if you check out those pics you'll even get to see one of your webmaster back in his chubby days - Allen)

Mark your calendars, because it will soon be time for the next release and screening from MINDSCAPE PICTURES! We are proud to announce the release date of Bent: Volume Two is Tuesday, March 11, 2003! Two days later, on Thursday, March 13, 2003 we will again take over the Belmont Studio Cinema at 376 Trapelo Road in Belmont, MA to screen this latest collection of short movies from writer/director Jason Santo and company.

Bent: Volume Two, like the first volume in the series, features three movies bound together by the theme that like the path of water, the life of a person can be suddenly "bent." In Time Heals All Wounds, two friends are frozen in time by an unanswered question about lost love. In the experimental silent picture The Dinner, two couples get together for a seemingly normal dinner party that seems ripe with adulterous subtext. And in the plot-twist-laden In a Sky With No Angels, (Best Short Movie, Best Writer, Best Director, Next-Tuesday Magazine) a woman is unexpectedly contacted by a now on-the-run high school acquaintance claiming to hold the secrets of life, death and the existence of God.

The DVD presentation of Bent: Volume Two features approximately 60 minutes of special features including animated menus, individual movie selection, 6 trailers for MINDSCAPE PICTURES releases and 3 behind-the-scenes featurettes.

January 2003 saw two of our most anticipated movies complete post-production: Here Comes Your Man, starring Gene Dante as Michael Cross, a man who maliciously spreads HIV to women he seduces, and The Dinner, a black and white, dialogue-less movie featuring popular B-movie actress Tina Krause (Witchouse 3) as a dinner guest with an intriguing secret.

Here Comes Your Man is one of MINDSCAPE PICTURES most ambitious works to-date. The twenty-two minute movie features a cast of about 30 people, was shot in a variety of different locations all around Boston, and prominently includes three outstanding rock/pop songs by Arlington, Massachusetts-based musician Mike Perry. The movie will be released during Spring 2003 on Bent: Volume Three.

The Dinner features a wonderful cast of professional actors including the aforementioned Tina Krause, as well as local actors Jennifer Irizarry, Christopher Soroka, and Paul Sarkis. Acting as the dialogue for all the characters in this seventeen-minute piece is a mesmerizing music score by Georgia-based composer Annie Brunson, a frequent MINDSCAPE PICTURES collaborator whose work can be heard on Bent: Volume One during the movie Marisa. The Dinner will be released on March 11, 2003 as part of Bent: Volume Two.

The Dinner, one of our most recent productions, will be screening at a small, unjuried movie exhibition night called "Local Filmmakers UNight" on Sunday, February 23, 2003 in Providence, RI. The theme of the night, in tune with the February holiday of Valentine's Day, is love. The Dinner will make an interesting addition to a line-up that also includes a documentary called Loose Lips about - what else? - kissing! This is the first screening of The Dinner anywhere, so if you're interested in seeing the picture be sure to attend this non-competitive film screening that's free of admission at AS220, 95 Empire Street, Providence, RI. 02903. For more information about the forum and future nights' theme, contact Spyce at wikiddork@aol.com

From Mark Pirro:

Polish Vampire and Queerwolf DVDs are out in the world. So if we don’t have to worry about rationing non-radioactive water from nuclear fallout this month, they should be available in a video store near you. If not, MOVE! It was a long hard road to get them out there with some degree of quality control, which was tough to maintain once the films left my hands. As I may have said some months back, I’m only about 75% happy with the end result, but that’s a lot higher then I’ve ever been with any prior release. The director's commentary track cuts in and out on Queerwolf and that is quite aggravating to me (and probably to any listeners). How did it slip by? No quality control at the DVD encoding house. As many of you know from previous monthly newsletter updates, I complained about many problems throughout the DVD encoding process, and by the end was just happy to get the movie in an acceptable form. Since I'm contractually limited to bitching and moaning and since MTI pushed the release date back three or four times just to correct more important flaws with the movies themselves, in the end, there was little I could do. Maybe if they get enough complaints from consumers, they will realize how important it is to get it right and redo it at some point!

We’ll be having a Polish Vampire 20 year anniversary/DVD release screening on the 14th. Maybe we’ll post a picture or two from it in next month’s newsletter.

I’m happy to say that we are pretty much finished with principal photography of Rectuma. There is only one full scene and a few pick ups left to do. I’m still working on punching up the ending, so that will require another day or two of shooting. I received some footage from our second unit team up in San Francisco, headed by Rick Popko, and their footage is very cool. They had access to a police car and Alcratraz, and put it to good use. This is becoming quite a quality little film. Pretty crazy - a movie about a giant ass with no budget shooting with units in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. I’m so proud. Eventually we’ll start the looping/foley/ADR process. The extensive visual effects are coming along fine, with longtime Pirromount associate Glenn Campbell helping out with his expertise. Thanks to today’s technology and a great support team, we can work on many effects while still in production.

I’d like to thank Martha Spinks for allowing us to film in The St. Barnabas Senior Center. She allowed our crew to come in and disrupt her business for two days, without any complaints. Also, thanks to associate producer Jim Rainey for getting us several other locations. As this is the month of Valentine’s Day, I’d like to address something that many of you have asked about through letters and email. Some of you have trouble believing that Polish Vampire was produced for $2500, Color-Blinded was produced for $500 and Rectuma for less than that. It’s not about being a hustler and stealing shots, it’s about friendships and support from people like the two I mentioned above. It’s help and cooperation from people like those that have allowed me to make movies for the last 25 years. The truth is, in the low budget world of filmmaking, especially in MY low budget world of filmmaking, which is untraditional even by independent standards, friends and relationships are everything. And good friends are more valuable than any development deal or power lunch you can hope to muster up in this superficial town. My latest production has been the smoothest running movie I’ve ever produced, second only to my last film, Color-Blinded. Why? Not necessarily because I’m a better filmmaker (oh God, not that!), but because I believe that over the years I have discovered how to nurture and treasure relationships that are worth nurturing. Those relationships don’t happen over night. They happen over a long period of time and growth. There are many, many MANY users in this town and will step over their grandmother to get industry recognition. They play the role of trusted friend only to fulfill their hidden agenda. Anybody who has ever worked with me and knows me well enough, knows that I survive on honesty and the earned trust of good friendships. That’s why I can get $2000 a day locations for free, that’s how I can get rental equipment, lights and cameras for nothing. I can make my movies for so little not because I’m a great wheeler and dealer, but because I work at maintaining good relationships with people that are worth maintaining. That’s why 85 or so percent of the same people I started out with 25 years ago are still with me. A few are not, and in every case it’s because they let their egos, greed or sense of self-importance get into the way, in my way and more importantly, in their own way. Some of you are privileged to receive the yearly “Marky Fun Tapes” which I’ve been producing since 1995. For those of you who don’t know what they are, Marky Fun Tapes are little 90-120 minute videos that sort of document whatever is going on in the world of Pirromount in the previous year. They started out going just to my family members, but over the years have grown to a larger network of friends and acquaintances. In many of those tapes, we’re pretty vocal about who’s been naughty and who’s been nice and many of you have commented on how honest and funny they are (especially some of the phony trailers and comedy bits we make with them). To those of you, I’m glad you enjoy them. But those tapes are nothing more than glorified home movies. And home movies are usually reality tv in its purest form. So, with purity, comes the comedy of the Marky Fun Tapes. And if some of you may feel it’s at the expense of others…well…when one has character and is truly a good person, I let the world know. When someone is a bad person, I let the galaxy know.

Other Pocket PC Films’ starring Academy Award winners/nominees include: Jack Nicholson in JACK PACK (a double feature with LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS and THE TERROR), Nicole Kidman in NIGHTMASTER, Ed Harris and Robert De Niro in JACKNIFE, Robin Williams in THE BEST OF TIMES, and Woody Harrelson, Juliette Lewis, and Robert Downey Jr. in Oliver Stone’s NATURAL BORN KILLERS.

MTI Home Video, the leading independent home entertainment studio, will release Gator Entertainment’s psycho-thriller, PHOBIC, for sellthrough on VHS and DVD April 15, 2003 (prebook: March 27, 2003).

PHOBIC will be available on DVD (sellthrough priced at $24.95 SRP) and on VHS (rental priced at $89.95). Special DVD features include interactive menus, scene selection, cast biographies, and optional Spanish subtitles.

The psycho thriller stars Billy Parish (Warpath, Talisman) and Anthony Azizi (Tomcats, For Richer or Poorer, McHale’s Navy). PHOBIC was written by Tim Munson, with Alexandra Lief directing. Producing credits go to Ruby Lopez.

PHOBIC is the suspense driven story of a young man's desperate struggle against a violent killer. When Joey Waters (Parish) witnesses the brutal slaying of his sister, he becomes an agoraphobic – terrified of leaving the safety of his house. His mother, his shrink, even his girlfriend attempt to convince him that the killer (Azizi) has been caught, but he's haunted by a cryptic promise – "I'll come back for you, Joey...I'll come back.” Trapped in his own home Joey must overcome his fear... to survive.

MTI Home Video, the leading independent home entertainment studio, will release Artist View Entertainment’s feature films, ICEBREAKER, THE ATLANTIS CONSPIRACY, and DRIVEN, on DVD for the first time April 29, 2003 (prebook: April 10, 2003). All films will be available on DVD (sellthrough priced at $9.95 SRP).

ICEBREAKER

The feature film stars Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings films, Rudy, Courage Under Fire), Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead films, Spiderman, Escape From L.A.), and Stacy Keach (Titus, American History X, Mike Hammer). The film was written by Hasso Wuerslin, directed by David Giancola (Diamond Run, Peril, Lightning: Fire from the Sky), and was produced by Peter Beckwith (Avalanche Run, Flood Zone, The Newcomers).

At the Killington Ski Resort, something has gone awry. Evil terrorists led by the sinister Carl Greig (Campbell) have taken the resort hostage with a stolen nuclear device. It's up to Ski Patrol bum Matt Foster (Astin) to save the day...and his fiancé.

THE ATLANTIS CONSPIRACY

The thriller stars Amanda Donohoe (Liar, Liar, L.A. Law, Lair of the White Worm), Jeremy Davies (Solaris, Saving Private Ryan, CQ), Bill Sage (Boiler Room, American Psycho, The Insider), and Adrienne Shelly (Sudden Manhattan, Trust, The Unbelievable Truth). The film was written, directed and produced by Dean Silvers, with Marlen Hecht (Committed, Manny & Lo, Wigstock: The Movie) also producing.

From the producer of “Spanking the Monkey” and’ “Flirting with Disaster” comes this irreverent, fun and dramatic story about the redemption of a jaded visionary, Lauren Marcus (Donohoe) who upon returning to New York must decide if she is willing to reengage in the life she abruptly left behind. Along with a young bookie friend (Davis) and a cynical federal agent, she gets pulled into a mystery born in a suicide, ending where it all began.

DRIVEN

The feature stars Chad Lowe (Popular, Unfaithful, Melrose Place), Daniel Roebuck (We Were Soldiers, The Late Shift, The Fugitive), and Tony Todd (Final Destination 2, The Rock, The Candyman). The film was written and directed by Michael Shoob (Parasite), and was produced by Daniel Linck.

Darius Pelton (Todd), Jason Schuyler (Hubley) and Dale Schneider (Roebuck) are a group of road-weary cab drivers trying to make sense of their desperate lives while eking out a living on the mean streets of L.A. Far from the bleakness of “Taxi Driver”, DRIVEN is a story of camaraderie, passion and vulnerability. The appearance of Legrand (Lowe), a new cabbie with an almost mystical presence, challenges the callous drivers to reach for their dreams. Alternating between humor and intensity, boasting a talented cast of fine actors, Driven is both precise and powerful in evoking the fears, frustrations, hopes and dreams of a group of men who discover that their destinies and destinations are beyond their control.

“Without Evidence” will be available on DVD (sellthrough priced at $19.95 SRP) and on VHS (sellthrough priced at $24.95). Special DVD features include interactive menus, scene selection, movie trailer and information on how viewers can collect a $1 million reward for information that will lead to the real-life capture and prosecution of Michael Francke’s killer(s).

The thriller stars Angelina Jolie (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Girl, Interrupted, The Bone Collector), Scott Plank: (The Division, Mr. Baseball, Melrose Place), Anna Gun: (The Practice, Enemy of the State, Junior), and Andrew Prine: (Gods and Generals, Sweet Home Alabama, James Dean). The film was written by Phil Stanford and Gill Dennis (Home Fires, Return to Oz), with Gill Dennis also directing. Producing credits go to Eric R. Epperson (Lakeboat).

“Without Evidence” is a true story with a brutal murder and a real $1,000,000 reward. The head of Corrections for the state of Oregon, Michael Francke, was expected to run for Governor until his untimely murder. Local and state officials were quick to label Francke’s death as a burglary gone wrong, but facts of the case point to a chilling conspiracy. The mysterious circumstances surrounding his death have since lead to a nationwide search for evidence leading to the conviction of the person or persons responsible for this heinous crime. Born out of incredible headlines, “Without Evidence” is a gripping odyssey, aspiring to expose a surreal murder by soliciting information as to the identity of the true killer or those who hired him. A genuine $1,000,000 reward is being offered for evidence which will solve the case and bring those responsible for the cold-blooded murder to justice.

“Crime Scene” will be available on DVD (sellthrough priced at $24.95 SRP) and on VHS (priced for rental at $89.95 SRP). The VHS will be available in both English and English with Spanish Subtitles, as well as a money saving two-pack (VHS - $129.95 SRP). Special DVD features include interactive menus, scene selection, Spanish subtitles and cast biographies.

The feature film stars “Maxim” model Amber Smith (Tomcats, American Beauty, L.A. Confidential), Kelly Taylor (American Lottery, Local Boys), Chris Flanders (Social Intercourse, Coyote), GiGi Erneta (Cheerleader Massacre, Crossed), and Robert Vernon Eaton (The Big Hit). The film was written by Paul Bales (Killers 2: The Beast, Max Knight: Ultra Spy), directed by Eric DelaBarre (Kate’s Addiction), and produced by Mark Boot (Cold Heart, The Midnight Hour), Eric DelaBarre, Scarlett Pettyjohn (Deception, The Weekend), and Scott Putman (Wonderland, Panic).

Amber Smith stars as, Charlie, a homicide detective who is investigating a series of sex murders in Los Angeles. Unable to trace the elusive serial killer, she decides to enter the killer’s world with the help of a renowned sex therapist. Together the two work to uncover the killer’s motives, while also revealing the therapists own dark secret. Soon Charlie discovers that she is in more danger than she ever imagined…

OBITUARIES

Dick Simmons Actor Dick Simmons, best known as "Sergeant Preston of the Yukon," died of natural causes in Oceanside, Calif. He was 89. The "Sergeant Preston" TV series, chronicling the adventures of a Yukon Mountie, his horse Rex and his dog Yukon King, ran from 1955 to 1958. Prior to his television success, Simmons appeared in bit parts and uncredited roles in dozens of pictures including "Sergeant York," "Stand By For Action," "Seven Sweethearts," "Thousands Cheer" and "Rear Window." Simmons also turned up in many of MGM's long-running series that featured Dr. Gillespie, Andy Hardy and Maisie.

It was said that Louis B. Mayer approached Simmons about a career in pictures after seeing him breaking horses in Palm Springs. Simmons struggled in small roles before the "Sergeant Preston" program began on radio in 1947, the creation of George W. Trendle, creator of "The Lone Ranger" and "The Green Hornet." The television version, while short-lived, was wildly popular, spawning all manner of merchandising tie-ins including games, gadgets, even deeds to one-square-inch of Yukon land. There was even a Klondike Land Pouch, which contained actual soil. All are valued by collectors today. Billed later in his career as Richard Simmons, the actor finished out his career with parts in such films as "The Devil's Brigade," "Robin and the 7 Hoods" and "Lassie's Great Adventure." His final appearance was in the 1977 telefilm "Don't Push, I'll Charge When I'm Ready."

Reggie Ryma

Comedian and paddle-ball expert, Reggie Rymal, who was featured in the Warner Bros. 3D shocker, "House Of Wax," died following a heart attack in La Habra Calif. He was 81. Rymal was an entertainer and comedian in the early 1950s and was well known for his paddle-ball skills. He performed standup comedy and paddle-ball at hotels around the country. He appeared on many television shows during the early days of TV including "The Eddie Cantor Show," "You Asked For It," "Ladies Choice" and "The Steve Allen Show." But he is best remembered for his paddle-ball act in "House Of Wax." In the 3D film, Rymal's paddle-balls seem to jump off the screen.
